Professor Liesbeth Lijnzaad is a prominent and internationally highly recognized researcher, judge in international law - and especially in the law of the sea - and former diplomat. Liesbeth Lijnzaad has an impressive career with many significant positions behind her and currently holds the role of professor at Maastricht University, while she has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg since 2017, where she has been chair of the Chamber for Marine Environment Disputes since October 2023.
Liesbeth Lijnzaad masters combining academic professionalism of the highest degree with the application of international law in practice in many areas, including not only the Law of the Sea, but also the regulation of armed conflicts/international humanitarian law, human rights and women's rights.
For many years, she has also served as a diplomat in the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Deputy Head of the International Law Division (1999-2006) and Legal Advisor and Head of the International Law Department (2006-2017).
Through her work, she has established professional connections all over the world and not least to Denmark, especially to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the Department of Law at Aalborg University.
